The winning essay:

HE TIPS back in his chair and yawns — a lion in a cage. He notices the spectators behind the glass, sitting in their desks watching him, avoiding eye contact. Just in case the beast decides to leave, you don’t want to be singled out. They like the fear he makes them feel, it breaks up the monotony. One of his keepers knocks on the door. “Excuse me, John. Mr. Carlson said he would be swinging by after lunch. Are you here?” The spectators pretend not to notice, the cage door IS open after all. The soccer mom sips her coffee from her empty mug, the intern pushes the book cart like a stroller. They are salivating.

“What’s he want?” John growls. “He said you’d know what it’s about.” The Alpha male realizes he has been biting the inside of his cheek. He tastes his own blood. “Thanks Jenny.” When the door closes, he mutters something to himself, and gets up to stretch his legs. “I’m fine” he thinks, pacing across the striped glass. “Who can kill a lion? Neither bear nor wolf.” Still, an icy feeling begins to creep up his neck. He stops in mid stride, his weight shifting slightly on the bristled carpet. He scans the crowd, nothing but diverted glances. Then his eyes lock on Carlson stepping off the elevator. The little man smiles at him, unafraid. It feels reaffirming until John notices a fleshy, pink sheet of paper pinched in his right hand. “He brought a dagger.” John can barely whisper the words, fogging the tempered glass inches from his course tongue, “Scorpio. Little Devil. He’s come for me.”

After having imported Ichabod & Apple into iTunes, I noticed that nearly every song had a short sentence or two in the “Comments” section. Here they are if anybody is interested:

“Kites in the Harbor” | wrapped up in the line - there are weights at work, even in the air.
“Summersong (when i was 23)” | why are we moving backwards here? Why are we moving always upwards always in?
“Pawny-Me” | Those sounds - those there - them’s my teeth rattling. And those words are Lord Byron’s. A song for marching to – up old Jacob’s ladder, holding on with both hands. I never complained for the view.
“North Wind, South Wind” | oh fierce shame! to be young again - to be at the back again! ”Look alive!” he says, and I am alive.
“I see, I say” | ”fifth wind” - guesses anybody? show me your hands.
“Birds At The Wind Hill” | off to church we go in our tweeds and ice skates - yes over the lake!
“weeping william” | he’s a wild weeper!
“My Darling Apple” | Apple has a long black neck and legs like dandelion stems. Oho! you say the moon is responsible for the tides!! there I say you’re wrong, for you’ve not seen my lady at work. She’s busy and strong, calm and baudy. my chest holds a fire for her.
“Over Me!” | In the space between the clouds there’s a yellow world. Sometimes, from my warm spot on the hill, I wish I couldn’t see it.
“Flycatcher” | Apple chases me through the crab grass.
“East Wind, West Wind” | Destiny is a mighty strange thing - being born into a Way - here I ask to taste the earth a little before I go.
“Mosquitosong (kiss for me)” | are girls holy things? this one took my blood without asking. I would have happily given had she asked nicely.
